MIDI Hardware
MIDI is short for Musical Instrument Digital Interface and is a technical standard protocol for the exchange of data between electronic instruments and controllers. MIDI allows for controlling and synchronizing various hardware like synthesizers, drum machines, sequencers or effect devices and it is even possible to control lighting systems via DMX.
MIDI keyboards can be used to gain access to the sounds of a connected synthesizer, be it hardware or software. Grand MIDI keyboards offer a tonal range of six or more octaves. Whereas compact MIDI keyboards only have two or three octaves, but are equipped with extensive controls as well that allow editing and modifying sounds.
Through MIDI it is also possible to transmit sequencer data to any MIDI compatible device with the help of MIDI interfaces. Professional MIDI interfaces offer up to eight In/Outputs and above that are provided with convenient synchronizing protocols like SMPTE or MIDI timecode. MIDI controllers allow for remote control of sequencer software and inherent Plug-Ins.
In order to connect the various MIDI equipment, MIDI cables are needed. These specific cables have five-pin plugs and are able to transmit MIDI data over a distance of up to 10 meters without delay.
