Trumpets are brass wind instruments. Nowadays the term “trumpet” usually means the valve trumpet. It originates from a line of predecessors like the natural trumpet and the keyed trumpet. The sound of a trumpet is generated through the swinging of the lips that produce a standing wave inside the instrument. An experienced blower is able to elicit different tone colours and has the possibility to determine the tonal range of his instrument through his playing technique. The greatest influence on the basic sound of the trumpet is the bore geometry and the gauge of the material.

The trumpet is used in the most different music styles from classical music to pop. Also in jazz music it is an appreciated instrument and musicians like Dizzie Gillespie or Miles Davis helped to build a lasting popularity of the trumpet.
