Clarinet

The clarinet belongs to the woodwind category. It was developed in the 18th century and its name derives from its dedicated function as a surrogate for trumpets, especially for high parts. The clarinets original name “clarinetto” means small trumpet.

The sound of the clarinet is generated with a swinging wooden reed that influences the air column inside the instrument. Clarinets have a large range of almost four octaves and therefore are famous for their flexibility. The clarinet is often used in classical orchestras but is also highly appreciated as solo instrument in jazz music. The most common clarinet is the B-clarinet that sounds a whole tone deeper than notated.
