Drums and Percussion
Drums are the leading rhythm instruments in modern music. They have their roots in classical orchestras, where the single parts of a drum set set are played by different musicians. The first complete drum set was released in 1918 and soon became a permanent part of big bands and jazz music. Modern bands and styles are unthinkable without it and it even influences the rhythmical foundation of electronic music heavily.
A drum set usually consists of a bass drum, floor tom, tom-toms, snare, Hi-Hat and cymbals. It can be extended with various instruments like bells, headless tambourines, chimes or gongs. Drums are played with two sticks and pedals. Pedals are used to play the base drum and Hi-Hat, other instruments like cowbells or headless tambourines can be handled with them as well.
Besides acoustic drums, there are electronic drum sets that came up in the early 80s. E-drums receive a beat signal from so-called trigger pads and transfer it to a drum module that produces the desired sound. With this technology drummers have access to a huge range of sounds and it even enables them to play melodically. The combination of e-drum pads and acoustic drums is also very popular and offers a broad variety of options.
Percussion instruments like bongos, congas, shakers or tambourines are traditional drum instruments that have their origins in Africa and South-America. In modern music they are often used as extensions for drum sets to create rhythmical deepness or a reference to a particular genre.
