Guitars and Basses

Guitars and bass guitars are undoubtedly the most popular instruments of Modern times and they strongly influenced the evolution of music in the 20th century. Guitars are classified as string instruments (chordophones) and they can look back on 15.000 years of history. The oldest representatives of this type were musical bows with just one string where the mouth of the musician served as resonance chamber. In the further course of history resonating bodies like gourds and were added.

Today’s guitars and basses are direct descendants of the Spanish “vihuela” that was developed in the 16th century. The name “guitar” originates from the greek word “khitara”. But this specific instrument belongs to the lyres and is more likely a precursor of string instruments like the zither.

The essential parts of a guitar are the body (hollow or solid body), the neck, the headstock with the tuners and the strings. Usually guitars and basses are tuned in fourths but the possibilities are rather limitless.

The combination of guitar and bass is an integral part of modern Rock and Pop music and everyone knows famous riffs of songs like “Smoke on the Water”, “Jailhouse Rock” or “Smells like teen spirit”. Every year thousands of people of all ages start to learn these fascinating instruments and so the legacy continues.
