SG-Style Electric Guitars
SG-Style Guitars
SG stands for solid guitar and this model was developed by Gibson in the late 50ies and was put on the market in 1961. Originally the SG was designed to replace the Les Paul model in order to face the strong competition from Fender.
Since then the SG model is a guitar classic and some players like Angus Young (AC/DC), Toni Iommi (Black Sabbath), Frank Zappa or Pete Townsend are inseparably linked with this instrument.
Nowadays the SG is often used in rock, metal, hardcore or stoner music and guitarists like James Hetfield (Metallica), Max Cavalera (Soulfly), Sebastian Oliver Lange (In Extremo) or Chino Moreno (Deftones) play their SGs passionately.
Body and neck of the original SG are made of mahogany und this wood provides a powerful sound that really shines when played with a distortion or overdrive effect. The SG is equipped with two humbuckers and a 3-way toggle switch like a Les Paul. Because of its design the upper frets can be reached comfortably. The SG is a modern classic and is offered by a lot of companies in its original design or in slightly altered versions.
